Wah - Unplugged

Wah's 2002 album OPIUM ventured away from the kirtan chanting of which she is typically known, instead creating a pop-crossover album that melded spirituality with intimacy. UNPLUGGED revisits that album, this time minus the upbeat pop arrangements. The strength of Wah!'s voice provides the centerpiece for the songs, each of which showcases the lithe nature of the artist's singing. Instrumentation is sparse, mainly consisting of a light, downtempo beat, guitar and a touch of harmonium. The style could best be described as "acoustic folk," which perfect fits the introspective lyrics. A very warm and thought-provoking album, UNPLUGGED shows that even without ancient mantras, Wah definitely knows how to lift the spirit in a multitude of ways.
